Explore Bursary
Bursaries are granted annually to Canada’s students to enable them to take part in five-week immersion courses during the summer. The École de langues of the Université de Montréal is certified as an institution participating in the Explore program of federal-provincial bursaries.
If you are a student in Canada, you may be eligible for a $2,200 bursary enabling you to take five weeks of French immersion classes during the summer at the École de langues of the Université de Montréal or at another institution approved under the French-language component of Explore, the federal-provincial immersion bursary program.

The bursary includes the following:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Language activities
- A number of cultural outings
However, it is recommended that you ensure you have pocket money.

The course is called Oral and Written Communication (90 hours – 6 credits). Emphasis is placed on acquiring competence in oral communication, without however neglecting the written aspects.
Seven levels are offered: three beginners’ levels, two intermediate levels and two advanced levels.
Your level will be determined by a placement test at the start of your session. Information will be sent to all students registered for the Explore program before the start of the session.
The five-week immersion course offered by the École de langues of the Université de Montréal is held from July 1 to August 1, 2020.
The course runs from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon, and four afternoons a week, as well as activities in the evening and on weekends.
You must meet the following criteria when applying:
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
- Be at the post-secondary level, or have completed at least Grade 11 (Secondary V in Québec) before the classes begin.
- Have been a full-time student for at least one term during the current school year.
- Be 18 years of age or older when the program begins.
- Be able to pay admission fees to the Université de Montréal: $ 275 non-refundable.
When you complete your bursary application, you must choose three institutions where you would like to study. There is no guarantee that you will receive your bursary for the institution you indicate as your first choice.
Sometimes, you may even receive a bursary for an institution other than your three choices. To find out how to apply for a bursary, go to the website of the Council of Ministers of Education.
Language workshops and cultural outings, particularly visits to tourism sites or museums and cinema outings, will enable you to immerse yourself in the Québec language and culture.
A trip to Québec City and sports activities are also part of the program.
You will stay in a single room in the university’s co-ed residence. Your furnished room will have a phone, a refrigerator and a sink. In addition there are various services in common areas.
For breakfast and lunch, from Monday to Friday, you will be given a personalized electronic card for the cafeteria meals. For all other meals, you will receive money in your bank account.
Students are usually covered by their provincial health insurance. If you require a medical consultation during your stay, there may be expenses to pay.
It is important, before your departure, to check with your province of residence about the reimbursement and compensation procedure. Please note that it is essential that you bring your health insurance card with you.
