Montréal has supplanted Paris to come in first in the ranking by the Institut Quacquarelli Symonds, which each year elects the world’s best student cities.

A number of factors were considered in the survey: the city’s cost of living, student facilities, employment rate and desirability. And for the first time, the views of 18 000 students were taken into account.

It was no surprise. “Favourably combining culture, creativity, open-mindedness and diversity, our city rightly stands at the top of the list of the favourite cities of international students”, Université de Montréal rector, Guy Breton, pointed out.

To understand international students’ enthusiasm for Montréal, the low cost of living, a crime rate among the lowest in North America, and the rich, lively night life must be added.
